THE EBBSFLEET LANDMARK PROJECT COMMISSION WAS ANNOUNCED IN MAY 2007 AIMED AT ATTRACTING AN ARTIST WITH AN INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION TO CREATE A PHYSICAL ARTWORK OF GREAT SCALE FOR A DEDICATED SITE, AT SPRINGHEAD, PART OF EBBSFLEET VALLEY.
Ebbsfleet Valley is becoming more familiar to the public now that Ebbsfleet International station has opened for Eurostar. Around 1 million visitors a year are eventually expected to use the station for international and domestic services. Over the next 25 years around 10,000 new homes, 6 million sq ft of retail, leisure and community uses will be developed together with around 20,000 new jobs.
This part of North Kent has a rich and varied history. Visitors to the UK have travelled through and settled in the region since prehistoric times - some traces of which are still evident today. Large scale industries have also left their mark on the site with architectural heritage referencing industries quarrying chalk and producing cement.
The landmark project will build upon the historic legacy, to provide a major contemporary artwork that will become a beacon for the communities of Ebbsfleet Valley, Gravesham & Dartford. The artwork will also contribute to the cultural identity of Kent.
The project patrons are London & Continental Railways, Land Securities and Eurostar who have provided substantial core funding and logistical support. Together they have invested in a cultural project that offers a 21st century vision and symbolic marker for their joint ambitions and long term commitment to the area.
