London & Continental Railways was created at the time of rail privatisation and in 1996 was selected by the Government to build and operate High Speed 1 (HS1) and to own and operate the UK arm of Eurostar.
HS1 is a major element of the Government's Private-Public Partnership programme, which enables important infrastructure to be provided for the benefit of the public sector while taking advantage of private sector management and efficiency. LCR is responsible for the delivery of the HS1 project which is on time and within budget. LCR and its subsidiaries, working with key business partners, are helping to design and construct Stratford City, a new metropolitan centre for east London. LCR is also working to create a vibrant new part of London - King's Cross Central - and is actively promoting the development of regeneration opportunities in Ebbsfleet. LCR's shareholders are Bechtel, Arup, Systra, Halcrow, National Express Group, SNCF, EDF, and UBS investment bank.
